Detailed Information on Water-Based Varnish

Hi,

Recently, water-based varnishes have become quite popular. The primary reason for this is not only because they are healthier, but also because they are nature-friendly. Water-based varnish is generally made from acrylic resin or acrylic urethane. It gets dry faster and smells less.

Because it is “water-based,” do not think that this type of varnish is not as effective as traditional solvent-based varnish. Water-based varnish, too, as much effective. As with traditional varnish, it generates a similar shiny protective gloss over the surface it is applied. If you want to better protect the natural look and feel of the wood, water-based varnish is the most suitable. After drying up, it becomes completely waterproof and protects against scratches.

All types varnishes contain volatile organic compound (VOC). During the application of the varnish on the surface and after, VOC mixes into air. Varnish makers ensures that the VOC value is at an acceptable level. Thus, all types of varnishes are safe as long as applied as advised. But, water-based varnish contains much less VOC, hence, it is much safer.

Water-based varnish provides a clean, natural look. All the tools used to apply the component can be washed clean in tap water.

Compared to oil-based varnish, water-based varnish gets dry much quicker. It dries in an hour and you can apply the second layer within two hours. Oil-based varnish, on the other hand, gets dry between 8 to 20 hours. However, water-based varnish requires more layers to be applied. Comparatively speaking, the protectiveness of four-layer water-based varnish equal to two or three-layer oil-based varnish.

Since it dries much faster, water-based varnish needs more care when applied. But, after the application, you can touch the applied surface in a shorter time without worrying about messing up the varnish.

So, how to get the best result from a water-based varnish?

The first rule is, of course, a good sanding. If you are working with a never-processed wood, make sure that you first apply a good grinding with a rough sandpaper. Then, gradually, use higher-degree abrasives and, before applying the varnish, use a fine sandpaper.

Then, apply the varnish on the surface with a high quality brush and let it dry. If you notice some brush marks, do not try to wipe them off, they will disappear in a short time. Make sure the varnish reaches all the corners and sharp edges. To this end, selecting the right brush type is significant.

Varnish is one of the most effective ways to protect items made from wood. Before deciding on which type of varnish to use, you need to consider the type of wood you are going to work with and where you will use it.

I wish you a healthy and beautiful day.
